That Can’t Afford a Breach

WordPress runs a large share of association, member and business websites in Australia. The core is well maintained; the WordPress security risk sits in what’s built around it: plugins that stop being updated, themes nobody owns, admin accounts nobody removed and custom code written years ago.

We are software engineers, not designers. We secure, maintain and extend WordPress sites that hold member and customer data, and we build complex WordPress platforms properly when a standard theme won’t do.

Most WordPress breaches start with a plugin: a critical flaw is disclosed, and automated attacks follow within days. We track vulnerability disclosures, test updates on staging and apply them fast, and we replace abandoned plugins before they become the way in.

Our security briefings cover the WordPress flaws that matter each week, in plain English.

When an off-the-shelf plugin can’t do the job safely, we write one. Member portals, renewals and payments, connections to your AMS, CRM or accounting system, and custom workflows are engineered with proper access checks, input validation and tests.

A secure plugin on an insecure server is still insecure. We run WordPress on hardened, monitored hosting with tested backups, multi-factor authentication on every admin account and least-privilege roles, then keep it patched every month on a care plan.

WordPress Security Checklist

The ten things we check first on every WordPress site we look after. If you can’t tick all of them, your site is easier to break into than it needs to be.

  1. Keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated, with critical security fixes applied within days and every update tested on staging first.
  2. Remove what you don’t use and replace plugins that are no longer maintained.
  3. Never install “nulled” (pirated) plugins or themes. They often ship with a backdoor.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication for every administrator, and for hosting, domain and email accounts.
  5. Give people only the access they need, and remove old staff and agency accounts.
  6. Run a supported PHP version on hardened hosting, kept separate from other sites.
  7. Keep off-site backups and test that you can actually restore one.
  8. Use HTTPS everywhere and add security headers.
  9. Lock down files: turn off the built-in file editor and stop PHP running in the uploads folder.
  10. Monitor it: new admin users, changed files, uptime and Google Search Console security alerts.

A checklist only covers what you know to look for. A WordPress security audit finds what you don’t: hidden admin accounts, injected scripts, abandoned plugins and everywhere member data travels.

Frequently Asked Questions

WordPress itself is well maintained and security fixes are released quickly. Most WordPress sites that get hacked are let down by what’s around the core: outdated or abandoned plugins, weak logins, too many administrators and poorly run hosting.

A security plugin such as Wordfence or Solid Security helps with login protection, firewall rules and malware scanning. It doesn’t replace keeping things updated, controlling who has access and running hardened hosting, and it can’t judge the security of custom code. Treat it as one layer, not the whole job.

Critical security fixes as soon as practical, ideally within days, because automated attacks start soon after a flaw is published. Everything else at least monthly. Test updates on a staging copy first so an update doesn’t break your member portal or payments.

Our website security audit is a fixed price: $1,950 for brochure and lead-generation sites and $2,950 for membership, portal and payment sites, with a board-ready report in five business days.

Don’t delete anything or restore a backup yet. Follow our step-by-step guide, WordPress hacked? What to do now, or get us to contain and clean it through hacked website repair.

Yes. We regularly take over WordPress sites from agencies and developers who have moved on. We start with an audit so you know exactly what you have, then keep it secure on a care plan.
