Joomla 3 reached end of life on 17 August 2023, and no official core patch has been available since February 2025. Joomla 4 support ended on 14 October 2025. Joomla 5 moves to security-only fixes on 13 October 2026 and reaches end of life on 12 October 2027.
Many Joomla sites were built years ago by agencies that have since moved on, using templates and extensions that are no longer maintained. That makes them hard to update and easy to attack.

Joomla 3 to 4 or 5 changed the core, the template system and many extensions, so most upgrades need a template rebuild and an extension-by-extension review. Joomla 4 to 5 is smaller, but compatibility layers and extensions still need checking.

Is Joomla 3 still safe to run?
No. Joomla 3 reached end of life on 17 August 2023 and no official core patch has been available since February 2025. New vulnerabilities won’t be fixed, and old extensions make it worse.
Can we upgrade straight from Joomla 3 to Joomla 5?
Usually via Joomla 4, and most sites need a rebuilt template and replacement extensions along the way. We plan the path so you only go through the disruption once.
What happens to Joomla 5 after 13 October 2026?
It moves to security-only fixes until its end of life on 12 October 2027. If you’re upgrading now, we’ll plan for Joomla 6 so you’re not repeating the exercise next year.
