A Deadline With No Safety Net

When Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) was established, everything was new, a new organisation, new staff, new roles, and brand-new systems.

At the same time, more than 12,000+ solar installers and designers across the country were depending on this platform to keep their livelihoods intact. Every accredited installation generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), the Federal Government’s mechanism for paying installers. If the platform failed, even for a single day, it meant installers stopped getting paid. That ripple effect would touch over 12,000 business owners, their employees, and their families.

The timeline: just 16 weeks to build a system that would replace the old scheme operator, migrate all existing data, and launch smoothly, without interrupting payments or compliance.

To make things even more complex, there was a three-month transition period where both the old and new systems had to run in tandem. Pixelbird had to manage user data and accreditation records operating in two environments at once, a balancing act with no room for error.

Pixelbird approached this challenge like Apple would a product launch: start with the end-user experience, then engineer every hidden layer beneath it so the whole system feels simple, fast, and trustworthy.

We took ownership of every element of the environment, from hosting and infrastructure to application design, security, monitoring, and backup. Rather than treating these as separate parts, we engineered them to work in harmony as one seamless product.

The result was a platform that delivered:

Data Migration

Working hand-in-hand with the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) and the previous scheme operator, we faced one of the hardest challenges: migrating all existing accreditation data into a completely new system with a totally different data structure.

This wasn’t just moving rows in a database. The names and scopes of accreditations had changed, and the new system had to:

During the three-month transition period, every installer completed a brand-new application process that felt effortless on the surface. Every layer beneath was meticulously engineered so the experience felt simple, fast, and trustworthy. Complex data engineering automatically linked their existing accreditations, so when they logged in for the first time, everything was already in place. It was a monumental technical achievement, yet to the installer, it just worked.

APIs That Power an Entire Sector

Because STCs and compliance depend on real-time data, we collaborated heavily with the Clean Energy Regulator to build a custom API that fed accreditation data directly into their systems.

With STCs tied directly to real-time compliance, there was no tolerance for failure, any delay would have stopped payments to every installer and potentially stalled the entire industry.

Our team carried that responsibility with surgical precision, ensuring the system never skipped a beat. STCs flowed seamlessly throughout the transition period, while the solar industry kept running, unaware of every key stroke that was happening behind the scenes.

Beyond the CER, we engineered custom APIs for key industry stakeholders, transforming the Online Accreditation Platform (OAP) from a compliance tool into the central nervous system of the renewable energy sector.

What began as an accreditation platform quickly evolved into critical infrastructure, a hub through which the entire industry connects and shares data, powering an entire ecosystem.

The OAP launched on time and on budget.

Over the three-month transition, installers successfully moved into the new system at a rate faster than originally forecasted. Despite the unexpected load on the new system, they were still able to transition across without impact, finding their records intact and the process smoother than before.

When a longtime client suddenly saw their $2,000-a-day online sales drop to zero, panic set in. They’d run every security scan available, VirusDie, WordFence, Security Ninja, and more, and all came back clean. But something was clearly wrong.

After ruling out plugin conflicts, we shifted gears and treated the site like a hostile takeover. That’s when we uncovered a sneaky user account called “seoadmin”, which looked legit on the surface. But digging deeper, we found something chilling: a small, hidden snippet of JavaScript on the checkout page that silently swapped out their PayPal account with the hacker’s.

None of the scans caught it. No red flags showed up in the browser console. It was invisible, until we found it.

Studies show that 30% of all WordPress hacks stem from compromised admin credentials, and nearly 97% of site vulnerabilities come from plugins or third-party code.

We removed the rogue code, scrubbed the site clean, changed all admin credentials, reinstalled every plugin from scratch, and got everything secure again. That same day, their sales were back.

Turns out the breach came from compromised admin credentials, and the hacker had carefully disguised themselves as a trusted SEO user. It was a tough one to spot, but that’s exactly why clients call us.

While working on a client’s site, we noticed something strange, several database tables were corrupted after a plugin ran its database prefix renaming feature. After some investigation, we realised the plugin was replacing every instance of “wp_” across the entire database, not just where it belonged in table names.

Of all the reported flaws in the last 5 years, only 0.58% were in the WordPress core, the vast majority occurred in third-party plugins and themes.

We documented the issue, gave specific examples (including MainWP table corruption), and reported it to the plugin developer.

Here’s How We Rebuilt Without Losing Brand Trust

Boxfactory had been around for decades, and their website looked the part, familiar to their customers and consistent with their offline presence. But while the branding still worked, the site itself didn’t. Clunky structure, poor mobile performance, and a form that dropped enquiries without warning. They didn’t want a flashy new design. They just wanted the thing to work.

So we rebuilt it from the inside out.

We migrated the site to a new WordPress + Elementor stack, keeping the exact same look their customers knew, but finally giving it speed, structure, and form reliability. We streamlined the user flow, fixed the broken form logic, and made sure every enquiry came through loud and clear.

In July, Boxfactory’s site brought in 38 enquiries. By November, they were getting 65 enquiries a month, a 70% increase without changing the site’s look. 75% of those came directly from organic search.

And every single one came through the Contact Us form, no distractions, no fluff, just leads.

We didn’t mess with what worked visually, we just made the backend bulletproof. And it paid off.
